Palestinian Refugees Produce Anonymous File Sharing Service
CNet News tells the story of Earthstation 5, a new peer-to-peer file sharing program that promises anonymity and safety from lawsuits to its users. The twist? This software is being produced by a company based in the Jenin refugee camp in the Palestinian West Bank.
Copyright laws in the Palestinian territories offer strong protection for Palestinian works, but are much weaker on outside intellectual property. As one of the company’s founders says, it might be a tad difficult to take legal action on the company even if the RIAA wanted to:
“We’re in Palestine, in a refugee camp,” said Ras Kabir, the service’s co-founder. “There aren’t too many process servers that are going to be coming into the Jenin refugee camp. We’ll welcome them if they do.”
