Microsoft “Solves” Security Problem, Forces Users to Type Out Link Addresses
Microsoft is sticking to it’s pledge not to provide substantial upgrades to Internet Explorer, come Hell or high water. In the most shockingly ludicrous example yet, they have recommended on one of their support pages that users avoid having their browsers hijacked by malicious URLs by typing the web addresses of links into the address bar manually.
The most effective step that you can take to help protect yourself from malicious hyperlinks is not to click them. Rather, type the URL of your intended destination in the address bar yourself. By manually typing the URL in the address bar, you can verify the information that Internet Explorer uses to access the destination Web site. To do so, type the URL in the Address bar, and then press ENTER.
Or you could just upgrade to a real browser and avoid such nonsense altogether.
