A mailing list I belong to recently erupted in discussion over dissatisfaction with any of the major candidates for President. Many members wished for a third-party alternative and some simply stated their refusal to vote based on the choices at hand. This was before Dean bowed out and Nader announced his candidacy, but from what I can tell feelings on the list have not changed much after recent events.

I’m of the opinion that voting is not just a right, but a responsibility of American citizenship. As my grandfather once said, people who don’t vote get the government they deserve. To defend this point of view, and to try to convince my fellow list-members that there is no shame in voting for the lesser of two evils, I wrote a brief missive stating my beliefs about the two-party system in America. Now, with Super Tuesday upon us and crucial primary competitions getting underway across the country in ten states, here is an updated version of that message. I look forward to hearing what my friends and visitors have to say.
