Mostly by standing too close and rather obviously staring at the contents of my wallet as I paid for my cigarettes. The guy was practically standing on tiptoes to count the bills in my billfold. That kind of ogling of my personal monetary property just sets off all kinds of alarm bells.

He walked the same direction as me, but slower, for about a half block after we both left the convenience store. I crossed the street too see what he'd do, and he decided not to continue being painfully obvious and amateurish. I hope for his sake that he gives up petty crime for panhandling; as bad as he is at the former, he's sure to make a relative killing doing the latter.

It's a slang verb encompassing senses 4b, 10, and 13 of the noun form as defined <a href="http://www.bartleby.com/61/26/M0112600.html" title="'mark' - The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 4th Ed. (2000)">here</a>.

Heh. Leave it up to an English nerd like me to give such an exacting description of criminal slang.
