“I am sick and tired of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have never fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desolation, and destruction. War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it. War is hell.”

General William Tecumseh Sherman

  1. Hmm, I may be wrong but I think this quote has been doctored. The first half I thought was from a letter to his wife, the famous war is cruelty; you cannot refine it is from a letter to the city of atlanta and the ending is from his war is hell speech to the military academy. Or so I thought.

  2. Interesting…

The quote appears the way I found it, though I didn’t bother to research and confirm its validity because I’d heard parts of it before. I don’t have time to do the research right now. If you happen to run across something confirming whether Sherman ever said all this stuff at once, however, I’d love to know about it.
