Snow (and Ice) Day
Thanks to a nasty ice storm that hit the state last night, I have today off from work. I don’t mind the day off, but I do wish that it had come without the natural disaster.
We had an ice storm like this a few years ago, and there were a handful of traffic fatalities and some freezing deaths. This time we weren’t hit as hard where I live, but a much larger portion of the state was hit, and badly. Kansas governor Kathleen Sebelius has declared a state of emergency for over half the state, parts of which are covered in up to an inch of ice. We aren’t the only ones, either — apparently, much of the Midwest was hit as well. My heartfelt appreciation goes out to the road and utility crews, police, and emergency services workers who are working their asses off to restore normalcy as I write this.
As for myself, I’m going to avoid going out except maybe to take some pictures. I’ll probably do a little housework and some web-related stuff. I just noticed that there’s another piece of post-upgrade cleanup I need to do on this blog, so I’m going to head over to the ever-helpful #wordpress IRC channel. More later.

We lost power for most of the first day, but were fortunately some of the first people to have it restored. According to the news, 64,000 still don’t have power.
Of course, once we got the power back, we lost the cable (TV and internet). Thank god we hadn’t yet subscribed to Cox Digital Telephone. However, it is notable that it was the first day since I got cable access that I was jealous of dial-up users (who, if they still had working phones, could still get online).
Just went outside and took a look around. Really beautiful scenery, despite the disaster. I’ll post some pictures on Passive Digressive if I can get my camera working.

Glad to hear you got through it more or less okay. I’ve taken some pictures myself, and posted one of them to my photoblog. I’ll try to get the others up soon if they’re any good.
