Verizon Hates Firefox

Or at least their web site does. Don’t bother trying to pay your Verizon cell phone bill online if you use the popular open-source web browser — you can’t. Not only does their site look subtly different in Firefox — a forgivable, if unnecessary and annoying, offense — but it also simply won’t process online bill payments.

You fill in your payment details, click “Next,” then click “Finish” on the confirmation page… and you get the payment details page all over again. Then you sit there scratching your head over whether or not your payment went through, and wondering whether trying this again with Internet Explorer will get you a double charge.

This is no way to treat over 20 million of your potential customers.

  2. I just found this out the hard way. I just had a nice chat with the folks at verizon wireless. they said that they do not plan to change their website anytime soon, they are rather petitioning firefox to accept, a certain type of java pop up code.

  3. Yeah well they can bite me. I’d rather use IE on their site than compromise the pop-up blocking in Firefox.

FF has become popular enough that I think they can win this dispute if they don’t back down. I expect that the Verizon site will eventually become compatible.

  4. I have worked for Verizon Tech support and first off don’t blame the tech support for crappy service, Verizon binds them with well over a thousand “out of boundry rules”. But rather to the point. Verizon does not support any browser other then IE for several reasons. the more browsers to support means the more they have to learn to troubleshoot. Verizon also has an affiliation with MS and thier own MS support team. And with verizon online they have had problems with other browsers not displaying properly or blocking setup sites, not just on the verizon pages but with all routers and modems as well.
