Xored Software has made Release Candidate 2 of their TruStudio PHP IDE available for download. TruStudio is based on the open-source Eclipse platform, and has tons of outstanding features. I’ve tried a handful of PHP IDEs since beginning to learn the language, and TruStudio is by far the most impressive.

TruStudio is available in two versions: “Foundation” and “Professional” (AKA “free” and “not so much with the free”). Browsing through the features section of the TruStudio web site will show you the differences between the two — features are marked with an icon to indicate their availability in each. The Foundation edition is pretty impressive, but the Pro version really knocks it out of the park. Once they make 1.0, I’m seriously considering ponying up the $95 / year subscription fee to make the upgrade.

Update: I’ve been interested in Ruby and its web framework Rails for a few months now, but I’m putting off learning it since PHP adoption is so much higher right now. Ruby fans, however, will be happy to know that an Eclipse plugin exists just for them with support for syntax highlighting, debugging, and other common IDE features.
