In a decision that is bound to add fuel to the fire of the gay marriage debate, New York State Supreme Court Justice Doris Ling-Cohan ruled today that the state of New York must allow same-sex couples to marry.

Ling-Cohan found that the state’s Constitution guarantees basic freedoms that are violated when gay and lesbian couples are forbidden to enter into marriage. More information can be found in this press release from Lambda Legal, a gay rights advocacy group.

Updates:

  • The Village Voice reports on the case, and states that the ruling will not take effect for 30 days.
  • The Seattle Times, in an article syndicated from New York Newsday, provides more on the details of the case.
  • Another Seattle Times article — this one syndicated from The Los Angeles Times — notes that the ruling applies only to New York City at this point. If the city chooses to appeal the ruling, however, it will go to a state appellate court. If upheld there, the decision would take effect state-wide.
